City-Wide Tree Team – Neighborhood Green Teams

Proposed City-Wide Tree Work Group of the Neighborhood Green Teams Coalition

  • Big Goal – increase the tree canopy across Minneapolis (public and private trees) with a focus on low tree census tracts – getting new trees well established through property planting, mulching, watering 3 years.
  • Quarterly Coordination Calls – RCC is proposing that MTAC, RCC, Tree Trust, MPRB, Minneapolis City Trees, Hennepin Co. U of MN Tree Lab, regularly bring together neighborhood tree and volunteers and other interested partners – tree care companies, NGOs, CBOs to
  • Connect tree volunteers in each part of the city – Northside, NE, Southside, Phillips, SE, SW – – We could send out an interest survey to current volunteers active with Brewing A Better Forest, MPRB Tree Stewards, Health Dept Tree Ambassadors, U of MN Tree Care Advisors, Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists
  • Map out/ identify plant-able spaces high need census tracts (boulevards, parks, schools, businesses, yards)
  • Plan/Coordinate additional community tree planting events in high need census tracts in areas that will make a difference – i.e. near freeways, near playgrounds, etc. (funded in part by Mpls and Hen Co USDA grants?)
  • Get more boulevard trees adopted to be watered once a week for the first 3 years in partnership with Brewing a Better Forest (with text/email reminders) and Tree Watering Parties with MPRB Tree Stewards to water all the new trees on a bock and reach out to adjacent home owners to adopt their trees.
  • Support neighbors participating in the tree sale to plant their tree well, mulch and water.
  • Send email updates and social media posts and sample articles for neighborhood groups to share.
